A slow switch.

A slow switch.

Weekly foundation practices help you get back into your body so you can source the wisdom and support that’s available to you there. They are designed to be easy to action and accessible to all bodies.

What helps you switch from your workday to what comes next?

Practice: A Slow Switch

For 5 minutes at the end of your workday, I want you to intentionally switch from work mode to play or rest mode. You can do this practice once you’re home or, if your creative space permits it, in your studio/office. For this practice, all you need is a timer and yourself.

  • Set your timer for 5 minutes and start it.

  • Lie down on your back on the floor. If that’s not available to you, rest your body in a chair or somewhere else allows your body to fully relax.

  • Sink into whatever surface is supporting your body. Let your whole body get heavy and soft.

  • Turn your attention to your breath. Take a deep inhale so that your chest and belly expand as fully as they can. Exhale through your mouth until you’re empty. Do this as many times as feels right for you. Feel your body relax a bit more with every cycle of breath.

  • When you start to feel calmer, switch to inhaling and exhaling through your nose. Keep your inhales full and your exhales complete. Keep the body sinking into the surface beneath it.

  • Breath in this way until your timer goes off. When it does, take your time lifting yourself up as you move into your after-work rest and/or play.

Way In

Before starting this practice, put distance between you and your electronic devices. Wiggle around until you’re comfortable and then get still. Then, begin the practice.
