Finding community.

Finding community.

This is a practice for all of you who want support around how to find community where you are now. Note that your Current Way of Being is how you’re currently showing up—through your beliefs, actions, doings, reactions, and ways of checking—and your New Way of Being is how you’d like to show up. In Integral Coaching®️ we use metaphors as a way to capture these two different Ways of Being.

Practice

Finding community where you are now.

Purpose

The purpose of this exercise is to develop your ability to find community in your immediate world with the help of your body.

Whereas your Current Way of Being is looking for community elsewhere or online, your New Way of Being is able to connect to the people in their immediate space who might be able to offer belonging and community. Your New Way of Being knows that while their mind can get fixated on ideals or fantasies, their body is able to bring them back to what’s real. Your Current Way of Being is able to use their body as a gauge for who your people are.

Observations

Daily Practice

Throughout your day, when you are in conversation with someone—take a moment to check in with your body and see what it’s telling you about the person you’re speaking with.

  1. Start with your breath. Take 5 deep inhales and long exhales.

  2. Continue to breathe fully and drop your awareness into your body. Feel your feet on the ground, your shoulders relaxed and back, and your belly soft.

  3. From this open posture, allow yourself to fully receive the presence of the person you’re speaking with. Take in their words as well as the energy they’re bringing to the conversation.

  4. Notice how your body responds. Pay attention to any desire to lean in towards this person or to lean back and be less open.

  5. At the end of the conversation, check in with your body and listen to its response to spending time with that person. Note if it is asking for more opportunities to connect with them.
