More time becoming.

More time becoming.

Looking back on 2018, I was in a rush to get somewhere.

Looking forward to 2019, I’m focused more on being present in the process of becoming.

Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned this year, it’s that we spend more time becoming than we spend being who we want to be.

I’ve also learned that while having a clear and measurable end goal is important, that can never be the main focal point. If it is, we risk seeking out shortcuts, compromising our boundaries, getting pulled off track on our way to what matters to us.

Looking back on the past 10 years of my life, I was in a rush to get somewhere.

Looking forward to the next 10, I’m focused more on the micro decisions that I make in the process of becoming.

Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past decade, it’s that we spend more time figuring out the problems we need to solve than we do actually solve those problems.

I’ve also learned that while aspiring to create sizeable and impactful change can offer motivation and inspiration, we can’t give too much attention to the big. If we do, we risk missing out on the illuminating details, the possibility for 2° shifts that will lead to larger change, and how we can do our work in a more human way.

Looking back on the last third of my life, I was in a rush to get somewhere.

Looking forward to the next third of my life, I’m focused more on only my top priorities.

Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past three decades, it’s that most of us don’t have the time, financial, and human resources to do everything we would like to do.

I’ve also learned that while options can feel essential to our success, we can’t spend too much time seeking out more. If we do, we risk frittering our time away, watering down the power of what we have to offer, and missing out on the opportunity to connect to our people.

Looking back on yesterday, I was in a rush to get somewhere.

Looking forward to today, I am just going to move through my daily priorities one moment at a time.

Looking forward to 2019, where do you want to spend most of your time?
